Making yoga accessible. Cultivating connection. Empowering communities.
The YOGA Initiative is a growing social movement dedicated to bringing the benefits of yoga to communities where access may be limited, underserved, or entirely absent. We believe that yoga is not just a practice—it is a tool for connection, resilience, and well-being that belongs to everyone.
We are currently in our beginning phase, laying the foundation for a vibrant, community-driven network of volunteers, teachers, and supporters. Our focus is on exploring where and how yoga can best serve local communities, learning from the needs of the people we hope to reach, and creating sustainable ways to share the practice with care and intention.
At the heart of our work is a spirit of collaboration and service. We bring together like-minded individuals—whether seasoned yoga teachers, aspiring teachers, or enthusiastic volunteers—to create small teams, design community-based classes, and support one another in offering yoga in meaningful ways. Through mentorship, training, and ongoing support, we aim to empower teachers and volunteers to respond to the unique needs of each community with insight, compassion, and skill.
The YOGA Initiative is more than a program; it’s a movement rooted in inclusivity, equity, and shared purpose. We are guided by the principle of Lokāḥ Samastāḥ Sukhino Bhavantu—“May all beings everywhere be happy and free”—and we strive to embody this in every class, connection, and community we touch.
Join us as we grow, learn, and build a network that makes yoga accessible, meaningful, and transformative for all.

A foundational training in community-based and therapeutic approaches to yoga.
This 3-hour introductory training welcomes both yoga teachers and anyone interested in bringing yoga into communities or supporting this growing social movement.
For teachers, this is an opportunity to expand your understanding of yoga beyond the studio—exploring community service, yoga for specific populations, and a more therapeutic, inclusive approach to practice and teaching. This training is designed to empower teachers to meet the unique needs of those they are serving, while maintaining a strong foundation in classical yoga principles. It is the first of many trainings that will deepen into specific areas of need. Together, we’ll identify the communities and populations you feel called to serve and develop more specialized trainings over time to support your growth.
For those who are not yet teachers, this is a welcoming space to learn more about the work of the YOGA Initiative, connect with like-minded people, and explore meaningful ways to contribute. You’ll also learn about upcoming opportunities to train as teaching assistants, and—if you feel called—to eventually train to become a community yoga teacher yourself.
Together we’ll explore:
Defining Your Ideal Community — Identify the groups or settings that most call to you and where yoga can have meaningful impact.
Connecting with Organizations — Learn how to approach, communicate with, and build lasting relationships with community partners (including sample outreach templates).
Creating Your Support Pod — Explore how to form small collaborative teams—teachers, assistants, and support volunteers—to share the work sustainably.
Designing Meaningful Classes — Reflect on the specific needs of your chosen community, explore ways yoga can serve them best, and learn to adapt practices accordingly.
Showing Up with Presence & Care — Develop skills to manage expectations, maintain healthy boundaries, and embody the spirit of ahimsa and seva.
Ongoing Mentorship & Support — Receive continued guidance, coaching, and a community of peers to help you take the next step in sharing yoga beyond the studio.
✨ This is also a beautiful way to connect with the YOGA Initiative and One Yoga Vancouver communities—coming together in the spirit of compassion, inclusion, and shared purpose.
Rooted in the guiding principle of Lokāḥ Samastāḥ Sukhino Bhavantu —
May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may our thoughts, words, and actions contribute to that freedom and happiness for all.
All are welcome. Join us to learn, connect, and be part of a growing movement to make yoga more accessible and equitable for all.
