About Father Joe Pereira:

Father Joe Pereira is a unique blend of Catholic priesthood, social work, and yogic philosophy. As the founder of Kripa Foundation, a leading Indian NGO, he dedicates his life to rehabilitating individuals battling substance abuse and HIV/AIDS. Introduced to yoga at age eleven, he furthered his education with master's degrees and counseling certification. His path was profoundly shaped by meeting his guru, B.K.S. Iyengar, in 1968, and working with Mother Teresa in 1971. In 1981, he established Kripa, meaning "grace," offering a holistic model of healing through medical, psychological, and spiritual support, rooted in his belief in grace for addiction recovery.

Authentic Iyengar Yoga Practice with Father Joe:

  • Precision and Alignment: Father Joe is a highly respected Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher. This means you'll experience a strong emphasis on precise alignment in every pose, using props (blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, chairs) to help achieve correct form and deepen the practice.

  • Systematic Sequencing: Iyengar Yoga workshops are known for their meticulous sequencing, building poses systematically to prepare the body for more complex asanas. You'll likely explore standing postures, twists, backbends, inversions, and restorative poses.

  • Longer Holds: Poses are often held for extended periods, allowing for deeper engagement with the body and mind, and fostering greater strength, flexibility, and awareness.

  • Pranayama (Breath Control): Breathwork is seamlessly integrated into the practice. You'll learn and practice various pranayama techniques to calm the nervous system, enhance focus, and cultivate mindfulness.

  • For Father Joe, yoga is not merely a physical workout but a "work in" – a means to explore the inner landscape, address the psychosomatic dimension of being, and foster "remembered wellness" at a cellular level.

  • Anecdotes and wisdom drawn from his close relationships with both Mother Teresa and B.K.S. Iyengar, highlighting their compassion, dedication, and profound insights.

  • Father Joe is known for his warm, intelligent, yet demanding teaching style. He combines demonstrations with clear instructions and profound observations, making complex concepts accessible.

  • Addressing the "Blissful Brain": He speaks about the physiological effects of yoga, like the creation of nitric oxide and activation of positive neurotransmitters, leading to what he calls the "Ananda-Maya Kosha" or "Blissful Brain."

A yoga workshop with Father Joe Pereira is much more than just a physical yoga class. It's a holistic immersion into Iyengar Yoga, infused with spiritual wisdom, psychological insight, and a deep well of compassion, all aimed at fostering inner peace, healing, and a more profound connection to oneself and the divine.
